In this media review I will be talking about the song “Try” by Colbie Caillat and the important message she is giving to young girls. This song is about the trivials of being a young girl in today's society and trying to fit in. Caillat starts off by singing, “Put your make-up on, Get your nails done, Curl your hair, Run the extra mile, Keep it slim so they like you, do they like you?” Teenage girls typically think looks and weight are everything. This is the stigma that to be beautiful you must always look your best and to be thin for people to like you. This is severely damaging to teens because just being a teenager is hard enough then they feel like they have to worry about if they “fit in” or not. This mindset could lead to mental illness, eating disorders and even suicide. Colbie then goes on and sings, “Wait a second, Why, should you care, what they think of you. When you're all alone, by yourself, do you like you? Do you like you? You don't have to try so hard You don't have to, give it all away You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up You don't have to change a single thing” These are very powerful lyrics because she is saying, wait, why do you care what they think of you? The only person as a teenager that should wholeheartedly like you, is yourself. It is important for teenagers to love themselves before they try to change everything about themselves for other people. Colbie Caillat ends the song with the lyrics, “Take your make-up off, let your hair down, take a breath, look into the mirror, at yourself Don't you like you? 'Cause I like you” This song has the potential to have a really strong impact on young girls and women. The message is so strong and important that you should always love and accept yourself first before you care about what anyone else thinks. Girls will go to lengths to impress their friends or guys, but this song teaches us that it is more important to look in the mirror, and love yourself first.
